Pick a palette, not a uniform
Choose two or three colors that work together — think soft neutrals with one accent color, like navy, cream, and rust — and let each person wear a different combination of those colors. This looks intentional in photos without everyone showing up in the same blue button-down.
- Avoid large logos, text, or busy patterns — they date photos and pull focus from faces
- Mix textures: a knit sweater next to a linen shirt reads as put-together, not staged
- Layer with a jacket, scarf, or cardigan for outdoor sessions — it adds visual interest and gives you a wardrobe option mid-session
Dress for the location

Kids especially need to be able to move, sit on the ground, and get a little messy without anyone worrying about the outfit. Comfortable always photographs better than stiff and perfect.
